Slowly draining water from your tub, sink, or shower is not something to ignore. Locate to determine if the problem is isolated or widespread. Call a plumber immediately if other sinks or tubs are draining slowly.
If you have only one issue, you may be capable of resolving it with a few simple steps.
- Disconnect the drain stopper and determine the reason for the blockage.
- Use your hands, pliers and a wire coat hooker to remove a visible blockage.
- If the blockage is not accessible, you can run hot water through the drain. However, only if your pipes have metal fittings and not PVC.
- You can drain the blocked tub or sink using a plunger. This is a standard cup-style plunger that has a flat rim and is dark red. They come in different sizes. They are not suitable for use in a sink, tub, or shower.
- Cover outlet with waterproof tape or a clean cloth.
- Add enough water to the sink or tub to just cover the top edge of your plunger
- The plunger should be placed on the drain to create vacuum. You can pump the plunger several times to create a vacuum.
- The plunger may not clear the blockage. You can also use a plumber’s hose (available at most hardware stores) and pull the blockage out.
