As if dishes weren’t exhausting enough at the end, the drains in the sink can sometimes clog or choke to make it worse. This can happen suddenly or with warning signs. But, regardless of how it happens, a blocked drain should be treated immediately.

Here are some helpful tips to clear a clogged drain quickly before you have a panic attack.

Vinegar and baking soda

These two pantry staples may be just what you need. Mix them in equal quantities, 1/3 cup each. When you get a strong effervescence, pour the mixture into the drain. Let it sit for about an hour.

You can flush your drain with hot water and the fizzy chemical reaction will remove all the choking dirt and grime that has built up.

Boiling Water

Boil a kettle and allow it to steam through your sink drain a few times. This is the best and easiest way to unclog your drain. Do it every two to three days or more.

Caustic Soda

Caustic Soda or Sodium Hydroxide is another chemical that is great for clearing clogs and clogged drains. It is easy to find at your local hardware shop. However, you should make sure to get some eye protection and rubber gloves. This chemical can cause severe burns if it is not handled properly.

Fill a bucket with water to the top. Now add three cups of caustic acid to the bucket. Continue to stir it constantly with a wooden spoon.

The solution will instantly heat up and become effervescence. After taking all safety precautions, raise the bucket and pour the caustic solution into the drain. The caustic soda solution will reduce the amount of accumulations in the drain. Let it sit for a half hour before draining with boiling water.

Detergent

Use a cupful of detergent to mix into a large pot of boiling water. Then let the mixture run through the drain. The detergent ingredients are able to remove greasy accumulations. You can also use other tools such as a drain snake or plunger to clean your drain.

You can repeat this process several times to get better results. Finally, wash the dish with hot water.
